Regular Site-Reference readers know that we've been warning against basing your business model on ranking in Google's SERPs for quite some time now. For those of you who've kept doing what works instead of heeding our advice, let this post serve as more food for thought.
Tim Carter of
AsktheBuilder.com has made a
killing with Google AdSense. As he should – he runs a website that's been around since 1998 and he's a
real authority in his niche. His site boasts a PR of 5, he's got loads of killer mixed-media content, and it's even been plugged by well-known media outlets such as Fox, ABC, and the
Chicago Tribune.
Then, just shy of two years ago, all that changed.
Google's now-infamous Panda algo hit his site with a vengeance, and it unexpectedly tumbled from the search results for keyword terms across the board. Carter was stunned. He'd been raking in close to $1,400 a day through AdSense, and he saw that amount tumble to $70... seemingly overnight.
What did he do wrong?
