Surf the web today and you'll find that many of the most popular websites aren't owned by big businesses and corporations, but rather smaller start-ups and individual entrepreneurs. This comes across in the way they design their site and in the language they use, and there is a big difference between the 'new guard' of tech firm (think Google or Twitter) and the old model of technology business (think Apple or Microsoft).
I mean, can you really imagine Microsoft having a fail whale? Or Apple having a sense of humour at all? In some instances the bigger companies like Microsoft have been attempting to be a bit more down with the kids (their geeky programming achievements in the same vein of the Xbox achievements were quite amusing for instance), but for the most part these older and bigger companies present a more straight laced and traditional veneer.
The question then is when it comes to entering that space online - what's the best way for you to act? Do you attempt to be the hip and self-deprecating young business? Or are you better off presenting the corporate suit kind of look? Here we will look at finding the answer.
